The Clifton Park Water Authority has instituted a program to ensure that all fire hydrants on the CPWA system are operational in the event of an emergency. While there has not been an instance on record of a hydrant malfunctioning during an emergency, the Authority has begun an extensive hydrant maintenance program to make sure that there isn't one in the future.
In the past, the Authority has found and repaired hydrants that it has found to be either inoperable or operating incorrectly. These findings have either been through the use of the hydrants during flushing activities, or fire department use for drilling activities. Since the Authority does not flush every hydrant on its system during the annual flush, there are many hydrants that have not been operated in years.
Since the implementation of the program in May, the Authority has inspected and performed preventative maintenance on more than 600 of the CPWA's 1,500+ hydrants. Any hydrants found to be malfunctioning have been either repaired or replaced. The Authority hopes to complete the program by the end of the year, and will repeat the program biannually.
