Residents in Clifton Park now have a new way to get information about their community. Town officials announced they are rolling out out a text messaging system so people can sign up to get information during emergencies or natural disasters.
The messages will provide those who sign up with real-time updates on the emergency, action the town is taking and information on how to get help, according to Councilman Scott Hughes.
Hughes referenced the ice storm in December as an example of how they would keep residents informed about things like warming shelters.
Sign up for text message alerts is free, although your standard text messaging rates will apply. To sign up visit the town's web site.
Clifton Park is the first town in the state to activate a text messaging system, according to the Associations of Towns.
